We currently have two summer positions open for applications:

Student Team Leader – Indigenous/Heritage Knowledge

Hours: Monday – Thursday, 8:30 – 4:30, 30 hours per week, 9 weeks
Rate of Pay: $13.00/hour
Start date: ASAP

In cooperation with BLT, local First Nations communities and other community partners, and working with the “Qualicum First Nation Cultural Educator” in consultation regarding curriculum development and/or program implementation, the student will help create a natural and engaging process for exploring life as an indigenous child historically over the last 150 years.  Using Storybook Village as a back drop, visiting families will be able to experience hands on, the teachings that would be bestowed on a young child growing up in a village.  The student will also take part in other aspects of BLT programming including pedagogical narrations, technology and community engagement.

Duties may include:

Relevant research and applicability of Indigenous teachings for young children (how was language, writing, counting – ie: Literacy, taught?)
Assisting with the other staff on BLT related projects – especially focusing on bridging First Nations knowledge with current programs
Making use of existing cultural kits from Qualicum First Nation to use within the program
Work closely with the staff and manager on dovetailing indigenous teachings and Heart Mind Wellness to further develop and enhance future endeavors related to the two directions.

Applicants must be a full-time student during the previous academic year, and intend to return to school full-time for the next academic year. The applicant must be between the ages of 15 and 30 at the start of employment.

Preference will be given to someone who identifies themselves as a person of First Nations descent.

 

Team Leader

Terms:  Monday – Thursday – 30 hours per week, 14 weeks
Start date: July 4, 2017
Rate of Pay: $13.00/hour
Start date: ASAP

Work cooperatively with Building Learning Together (BLT) staff and volunteers to provide play based early learning programs to children aged 0-6 and their families.  Work in our spring and summer programs (Munchkinland, Storybook Village, and Mother Goose and Friends) and be able to promote all BLT programs and projects.  Work in collaboration with community partners and agencies.  May work with manager on a variety of other early learning projects.

Job Requirements:

Ability to work effectively with a variety of parents, caregivers, children, professionals and community members
Clear knowledge of child development, family dynamics, community resources and early learning
Good organizational and planning skills
Knowledge of the socio-economic characteristics of this community
Computer and digital knowledge
Excellent communication skills and collaborative in nature
Team player but able to be independent
Flexible, adaptable
Additional Information:

Current RCMP Record Check is a hiring requirement.

Require own transportation

Current First Aid certificate an asset.

Must be eligible for the Canada Summer Jobs Initiative:

  • Student must be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of employment
  • Student must have been registered as a full-time student in the previous academic year and intend to return to school on a full-time basis in the next academic year
  • Student must be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident
  • Student must be legally entitled to work in Canada
